On Friday, December 22nd, nine families were displaced from an 8-unit building on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Mamaroneck—just two days before Christmas Eve. While the building still stands, there are severe internal damages due to the electrical fire caused that night. These families—some with babies and children—lost everything because of water damage, smoke, and a caved in ceiling.
At CRC, we help all families no matter the need. That night, we responded quickly by opening up our doors to shelter families from the cold winter weather. It took hours for families to show as, understandably, they were hopeful they could go into the building and recover belongings and important documents, but unfortunately they weren’t able to. That night at 2:30am, families walked into CRC with Red Cross cards and wrapped in Red Cross blankets. Although we had already received sleeping bags and blow-up bed donations, we mobilized to drive and check them into motel rooms to rest with dignity and to have the space to process what had just occurred. The next day, thanks largely to our Mayor Tom Murphy, CRC opened up from 9-5pm to receive an outpouring of essential, monetary, and gift card donations. Young children came in with their saved allowance money--every last penny to show compassion and support. That Saturday night Beach Point Club offered a special dinner and take-home breakfast for the families affected. We worked with wonderful and dedicated community volunteers all day to sort all the clothing and other donations received. Our staff and our neighbors are in awe of how quickly and beautifully this community came together to save their neighbors. Because of this effort, $22,000+ in funds and over $18,000 in gift card donations were raised for the families. With this support, each family is currently seeking housing in the area.
On behalf of our Mamaroneck Mount Pleasant Fire neighbors, we thank you for your generous donations to support these families. We know that they will need assistance for months to come, and we are grateful that our experienced Case Managers are here to help them.
CALL TO ACTION:
We wouldn’t be CRC if we didn’t asses what the real need is in situations like these. Because of incidents like this one and so many more, we ask that you help us advocate for truly affordable housing in Mamaroneck and Larchmont. Speak with local elected officials such as your Board of Trustees, and demand that housing be affordable to keep our community economically and culturally diverse. We also ask that you help us keep landlords accountable for providing safe and livable homes to all families.

Please accept our deepest and most heart-felt thanks for your support!
